Whether you are fresh out of beauty school or you’re a seasoned stylist already working behind the chair…I think it’s probably safe to say that we all want our chair to be full of clients that we absolutely LOVE!  In this blog post I’ll be taking my 15 years of experience as a hairstylist and compressing them down to share with you the 10 most impactful ways I built my dream clientele…

Before I get started (*disclaimer*)

This article has nothing to do with social media posts, engagement strategies or algorithms.  It’s not an overnight fix to make all your hairstylist dreams come true.  Although I believe we are more empowered than ever to promote, market and attract our dream clients through social media outlets; I also believe that there are hairstylists out there who have an amazing online presence but are still left with an empty chair, dwindling clientele and a broke bank account.

So what’s missing?  What’s the secret sauce?

The great news is…I believe that your ideal clients are searching for you too!  What I’ve found is that its much less about HOW to build your dream clientele and more about WHO you are being in order to start building your dream clientele.  Here’s what I’ve got…

1) YOUR DREAM CLIENTS WANT YOU TO START STRONG!

They want the best version of you.  Are you starting off your days with intention and purpose OR are you hitting the snooze button, rushing around looking for your keys, speeding to work just to show up at the same time that your client is pulling into the parking lot?  It’s almost impossible to regain momentum when your days start of like this.  Give yourself enough time to do whatever it is that you need to do to start your day off strong and with a positive mindset.

2) YOUR DREAM CLIENTS WANT YOU TO SHOW UP! 

What I mean is that they want and need you to be present.  On any given day we have a million things going on, I know this…but honestly, when you are with your client…you need to be WITH. YOUR. CLIENT.  Not worrying about your phone, your emails, your bills or whatever else you have happening in the background.  The minute your client becomes secondary is the minute they will search for a stylist who will put them first.

3) YOUR DREAM CLIENTS WANT YOU TO DRESS FOR SUCCESS! 

Imagine walking into a high end boutique, ready to spend your hard earned money to purchase your dream wedding gown (or tux for the guys ;) and your bridal consultant comes out in a  wrinkled t shirt with a spaghetti stain on it, worn out jeans, and a pair of beat up running shoes.  Would you not be extremely confused and a bit concerned?  Yes…it’s an extreme example but the point is…dress the part!  If you want to charge premium prices you need to dress like a stylist who charges premium prices.  Its doesn’t matter whether your style is punk, hipster, glam, conservative or urban….wear it, rock it, be authentically and professionally YOU.

4) YOUR DREAM CLIENTS WANT YOU TO BE INVITING

Remember,  we are in our salons every single day…but our clients are not.  They are guests in our home away from home.  Welcome them, make sure they are comfortable, show them where the restroom is, offer them a drink…make them feel welcome!  An inviting welcome sets the tone for an awesome experience…and our dream clients LOVE awesome experiences.

5) YOUR DREAM CLIENTS WANT YOU TO LISTEN & CARE 

Exceptional customer service = loyal clients.  The very best customer service you can give isn’t some fancy coffee or wine but rather to actually LISTEN to your clients needs and to CARE about them.  In a world that is moving at the speed of light, it speaks volumes to STOP for a few minutes to absorb everything that your client is telling you about their hair.   Nothing will have a client jump ship faster than a stylist who cuts off six inches of hair that they have been growing out for six months because they weren’t listening.

6) YOUR DREAM CLIENTS WANT YOU TO BE AWESOME AT YOUR CRAFT!

Walk the walk and talk the talk.  Be GOOD,  REALLY GOOD and AMAZING at this awesome craft of ours.  TALENT is everywhere and clients have CHOICES at almost every turn.  Mediocrity is replaceable; so what are YOU doing to become a better hairdresser?  What skill are you practicing?  What technique are you mastering? What new and exciting service are you offering your guests? Think about it…

7) YOUR DREAM CLIENTS WANT YOU TO SHARE YOUR IDEAS!

So you’ve just had a killer consultation with your guest and you have the perfect cut and color envisioned for them.  This is your opportunity to SHARE with them!  Tell them NOT ONLY about the awesome new cut you are thinking about and the dreamy summer blonde your envisioning but also WHY you think it will look amazing on them. Your clients want to know that the style/ color your giving them isn’t “one size fits all”.

8) YOUR DREAM CLIENTS WANT YOU TO TEACH THEM!

This is one of my favorite topics!  Listen…we are in an information era!  Our clients want to know how to look & feel amazing EVERY day…not just on days that they visit you in the salon.  So TEACH them!  Show them how to style their hair and what products they need to achieve the same results at home.  Guess what…if you’re not, another stylist will…or better yet,  a 14 year old on You Tube will.  Step it up….it is part of our responsibility to TEACH our guests.

9) YOUR DREAM CLIENTS WANT YOU TO HAVE A PLAN!

Personalization is SO key.  As hairstylists our passion is to use our creativity to make people look and feel amazing.  So, what is the plan?  Where do you want to take your client on their hair journey?  What color or cut do you envision for them as the seasons change?  These are conversations you want to engage in with your clients…share with them your ideas and give them something to anticipate… Give them a reason that they should choose you time & time again.

10) YOUR DREAM CLIENTS WANT TO FEEL APPRECIATED! 

Time to get THANKFUL loves!  Every…single…client that chooses to sit in your chair is an absolute blessing.  Do you realize that not even a half mile away from you there is another salon with other talented stylists who are ready and willing to take on amazing new clients? But today, your guest chooses to spend their precious time and money to sit in YOUR chair.  That my friends, deserves gratitude!  If you totally skip numbers 1-9, at the very least practice number 10 and take time to thank your guests for their time, energy and trust!

So remember…what we put out into the world we attract.  Let me say that again….What we put out into the world we attract.
